The Chicago Executive Airport, in Wheeling, will soon be home to a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, the largest federal law enforcement agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The 34,000 SF facility will be located along the south end of the airfield where a former hangar once lived.

As a subconsultant to 845 Design Group, VES is providing MEP/FP consulting engineering services as the Engineer of Record.

Emergency backup systems were designed consisting of a generator, bypass isolation and automatic transfer switches. Uninterruptible power supplies, and manual transfer switch with a tap box were designed to meet the updated Section 708, Critical Operations Power Systems, of the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC). A clean agent fire protection system was designed for coverage of the security and telecommunications rooms, and the mechanical and electrical lighting systems were designed to meet the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

The facility, which Customs Officials will use to clear international aircraft and passengers, will house arrival and departing waiting rooms, secure processing and detention areas, bathrooms for passengers, a staff locker room, and other amenities.
