CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT BELMONT AIDS GARDEN
Completion: May 2022
Size: 2.5 Acres
Services: Electrical Engineering
VES contributed significantly to the realization of the AIDS Garden, a poignant memorial and educational space along Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline. This 2.5-acre sanctuary, situated on the historic site of Belmont Rocks, a former gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community, serves as a powerful testament to those lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and a beacon of hope for the future.
At the heart of the garden stands a towering 30-foot sculpture by the late artist and activist Keith Haring, a generous gift that transformed the space into a focal point for reflection and remembrance. As a subconsultant to Design Workshop, VES provided essential electrical engineering expertise to illuminate this iconic artwork and guide visitors through the garden's contemplative pathways.
VES's role extended to designing the lighting infrastructure that defines the primary circulation route, an oval pathway that gracefully winds around the sculpture, unifying the garden's various elements. By carefully considering the interplay of light and shadow, the electrical design enhanced the garden's ambiance, creating a serene and evocative atmosphere.
The AIDS Garden is more than just a memorial; it is a dynamic community space dedicated to education, healing, and inclusion. By providing the essential electrical infrastructure, VES contributed to the creation of a place where individuals can connect, reflect, and find solace. The garden stands as a powerful symbol of Chicago's resilience and commitment to honoring the lives lost to AIDS while fostering hope for a healthier future.
CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT GATELY STADIUM INDOOR TRACK & FIELD FACILITY
Completion: May 2020
Size: 134,000 SF (Track & Field)
30,000 SF (After School Matters)
Services: Architecture, MEP/FP Engineering
VES played a pivotal role in the design and construction of Gately Stadium, a state-of-the-art indoor track and field arena operated by the Chicago Park District. This impressive facility, capable of accommodating 3,500 spectators, features an 8-lane, 200-meter hydraulically banked track and a comprehensive array of track and field event areas, including long jump, high jump, a dedicated throwing cage, and sprint lanes. To complement the athletic amenities, the stadium also houses multi-purpose rooms, locker rooms, and concessions. Notably, a 30,000 square foot wing dedicated to the After School Matters program was incorporated to serve the local community.
As the Engineer of Record, VES provided comprehensive MEP/FP consultant engineering plans, ensuring the seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems within the facility. A key component of the project was achieving LEED v4 Certified status, a testament to the stadium's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. VES conducted thorough energy modeling for MEP/FP systems, demonstrating compliance with Energy Performance (EAp2) requirements and diligently documenting all MEP-related credits for LEED certification. Close collaboration with the commissioning agent and meticulous research were essential in meeting the stringent standards for this prestigious green building certification.
