Mr. Vela has over 20 years of experience in engineering. Project experience includes overseeing all phases of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) construction from development of proposals to supervising development of construction documents in all construction phases from Schematic Design through Construction Administration. Sam has worked with many architects as a prime consultant for bidding and construction administration, including commissioning. Samuel served on active duty in the US Air Force during Desert Shield and Desert Storm and received an honorable discharge from active military duty.

Project Experiences:


RUSH University Medical Center – Chicago, Illinois: Electrical design engineer for RUSH University Medical Campus (RUMC) Modernization projects to include central energy plant, Orthopedic Ambulatory Building, East Parking Garage, Loading Dock & numerous enabling projects for the new RUMC Atrium Hospital. Lead electrical engineer for the RUSH Central Energy Plant which incorporates a 12kV/25MVA electrical emergency power plant, chiller plant and boiler plant. Assisted in the development of the construction documents for campus wide electrical power monitoring system independent yet integral to the SCADA (load shed) and BAS. Developed construction documents for medical office spaces to include: CT scan rooms, Operative Rooms, MRI Suites, Radiology Suites & PET Scan rooms.  Developed construction documents for Bio-Mechanics Laboratories at the Orthopedic Ambulatory Buildings (2nd floor).

Christ Hospital – Oak Lawn, Illinois. Project Manager and Electrical Engineer for numerous imaging equipment installations to include CT simulator, fluoroscopy, 3T MRI, CT scan, radiology and CATH lab. 

South Suburban Hospital – Hazel Crest, Illinois. Project Manager and Electrical Engineer for the installation of 1.5T MRI, emergency department renovation study, cancer center renovation study and central energy plant chiller, water tower and generator additions study. 

Trinity Hospital – Chicago, Illinois. Project Manager and Electrical Engineer for the renovation and expansion of the GI Suite and installation of fluoroscopy imagining equipment. 

Saint Bernard Hospital – Chicago, Illinois. Project Manager and Electrical Engineer for the upgrades to the critical branch electrical distribution, fire protection installation and fire alarm system for the hospitals West Wing. 

Northwestern University – Mudd Library Renovation – Evanston, Illinois. Project Manager and Electrical Engineer for the renovation of 2,600 SF on the library’s third floor to accommodate the Academic and Research Technology Department. The renovated space includes reception, workstations and offices, meeting/collaboration area, and an enclosed consultation/imaging/presentation space.

Northwestern University – Allen Center Executive MBA Offices Renovation – Evanston, Illinois: Project Manager for this office renovation providing electrical and low-voltage construction documents, and construction administration.

Northwestern University – Allen Center Office Renovation – Evanston, Illinois: Project Manager for this office renovation providing mechanical, fire protection, electrical and low-voltage construction documents, and construction administration.

Northwestern University – Main Library First Floor Renovation – Evanston, Illinois: Project Manager for this library renovation providing fire protection, electrical and low voltage construction documents, and construction administration.

University of Chicago – Chicago, Illinois: Lead Electrical Engineer for the medical, laboratory, and office spaces to include brain surgery laboratories, University of Chicago medical center laboratories, and GoldBlatt laboratories. 

University of Chicago – Milton Friedman Project – Chicago, Illinois. Lead Electrical Engineer for the renovation (phase I) and addition (phase II). The project incorporates an underground 400kW generator, utility vault, service entrance electrical room, and automatic transfer switch (ATS) room.

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) – Chicago, Illinois. Lead Electrical Engineer for the renovation of the IIT Stuart 18th floor.

Northeastern Illinois University – Elevator Modernization – Chicago, Illinois: Project Manager for the replacement of two elevators.

University of Chicago – Social Sciences Administration – Chicago, Illinois: Project Manager for a number of projects including toilet renovation for compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
