Mr. Person has over 12 years’ experience as a mechanical engineer in the Chicago market. Project experience includes healthcare, laboratories, data centers, higher education, and commercial projects with a heavy focus on sustainability and innovative designs. Key skills include extensive experience with Autodesk Revit, Autocad, energy modeling with Equest and Trace 700 for load calculations and energy modeling

Project Experiences:

Northwestern Memorial Hospital – Outpatient Care Pavilion – Chicago, Illinois: Lead Mechanical Engineer for a new 998,000 SF, 25-story mixed use ambulatory surgery center and medical office building that includes a 162,000 SF specialty orthopedic clinic, 122,000 SF for outpatient clinics and outpatient surgery, and 237,000 SF dedicated to offices for physicians/faculty.  Project is designed entirely in BIM and is currently targeting LEED Gold. Project was awarded 2014 AIA Technology in Architectural Practice award for Delivery Process Innovation.  

Loyola University Health System – 6th Floor Renovation for Bone Marrow Transplant Dept. – Maywood, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the complete renovation to the 6th floor of McGaw Building. HVAC scope included a full HVAC system replacement for the floor consisting of a new custom rooftop AHU and. Existing hydronic radiant ceiling system was removed and replaced with all-air VAV reheat system to provide HEPA-filtered air to the floor. Project designed entirely in Revit to allow for much larger ductwork to fit existing tight ceiling space while maintaining or raising the architectural ceiling heights.  

Children's Memorial Hospital – 155 East Superior Infrastructure Upgrade/Renovation – Chicago, Illinois: Mechanical Project Engineer for an 80,000 SF infrastructure upgrade and renovation project to convert the building to medical office use. The design included a new air cooled chiller, refurbishment of an existing multi-zone AHU and building ductwork distribution system, new hot water reheat coils and controls, new toilet exhaust system, and new BAS control system to connect to the adjacent new Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

Northwestern University – Charles Deering Library Renovation – Evanston, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the renovation of this 92,000 SF, three-story historic library. Project scope includes the replacement of MEP and life safety systems; accessibility improvements; and restoration of interior spaces. In addition, new construction of approximately 5,300 sf is proposed for underground storage and conservatory-type reading areas. Scope included programming verification, conceptual planning, and MEP/FP schematic design.

University of Illinois at Chicago – Science & Engineering Laboratory (SEL) Buildings Renovations – Chicago, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the project to upgrade the HVAC systems in Buildings 607 and 608, housing 450,000 SF of academic and research laboratory space. The project goals were to replace aging equipment that was largely original to the building from the 1960’s and to increase systems efficiency and occupant comfort. The upgrades included the replacement of main air handling units with new VAV units, conversion of supply and exhaust terminal units from constant volume to VAV, new full building DDC control system, new consolidated laboratory exhaust system with VAV controls, and replacement of all existing fume hoods with low-flow, high performance hoods.

Loyola University Health System – Campus Master Plan – Maywood, Illinois: Mechanical Project Engineer for MEP infrastructure master planning services and capital improvement recommendations for the next 5 years. The project included a high-level, strategic capital review of Loyola’s two campuses - Loyola University Medical Center and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital - along with a review of a series of facility plans developed over the past few years.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – Chemical & Life Sciences Laboratory Chilled Water Plant Conversion – Champaign, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the modification of piping within the Chiller Plant and Chemical & Life Sciences building to supply chilled water to the Campus Wide Central Chilled Water System as well as Chemical & Life Sciences Buildings A, B, and C. Also included in the project was conversion of existing AHU from steam preheat coils to a combined runaround heat recovery loop and preheat coil system. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – Illini Union Infrastructure Repairs – Champaign, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the systems repair and upgrade at the historic Illini Union building including mechanical, electrical, and fire alarm replacements and upgrades. HVAC scope included air handling unit replacements  serving lower level dining and kitchen areas and associated steam and hydronic system upgrades. University of Illinois at Chicago – Dr. Nitiss Lab Renovation – Rockford, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the renovation of existing research lab space on the fourth floor of the 847 Building for use by a pathology researcher. Scope included new airside systems replacement, BAS control upgrades and supplemental cooling for lab equipment.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital – Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Campus Revitalization & North Market Strategic Facilities Master Plan – Lake Forest, Grayslake, and Glenview, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for Master Planning services to study the revitalization/redevelopment effort of three primary locations which comprise the North Market Strategy: Lake Forest, Grayslake, and Glenview. Master planning efforts for each site include: facility/site capacity assessments; the development of a general campus zoning plan; and optimum facility configuration to support program requirements and projects growth. CCH Incorporated - Renovation of Office Facility – Chicago, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for the MEP design, commissioning and LEED consulting services for infrastructure upgrades and interior improvements to this two-story office and printing facility. This client is a provider of information services, software and workflow tools for tax, accounting, legal and business professionals. HVAC scope included a complete boiler plant replacement and airside systems renovation.

Thomas J. Waters Elementary Annex – Chicago, Illinois: Mechanical Engineer for this addition to an existing CPS elementary school, which included a number of sustainable design aspects with the intent of using them as a teaching tool. These included hot water radiant floor system, solar thermal hot water heating on the roof, rainwater cisterns for drip irrigation, demand based ventilation, and a green roof system. The project was designed to LEED Silver.
